Post: The subsystem of the engine that maintains the input (oil and fuel) and output (exhaust gases and emissions).

A car’s exhaust system includes the exhaust pipe and muffler. When it comes to daily car maintenance, the first thing you might be concerned about is the amount of gasoline in your car. How does the gasoline you put in power the cylinders? The engine’s fuel system draws gasoline from the tank and mixes it with air so that the proper air/fuel mixture flows into the cylinders. Modern vehicles deliver fuel in two common ways: port fuel injection and direct fuel injection.
In a fuel-injected engine, the right amount of fuel is injected into each cylinder separately, either directly over the intake valve (port fuel injection) or directly into the cylinder (direct fuel injection). Older vehicles used carburetors, which mixed the gasoline and air as air flowed into the engine.
A computer component that monitors and adjusts everything. For example, a catalytic converter uses a catalyst and oxygen to burn off any unused fuel and certain other chemicals in the exhaust. An oxygen sensor in the exhaust stream ensures that there is enough oxygen for the catalyst to work and makes adjustments if necessary.
Besides gasoline, what else powers your car? The electrical system consists of a battery and an alternator. The alternator is connected to the engine by a belt and produces electricity to charge the battery. The battery provides 12 volts through the vehicle’s wiring to everything in the car that needs power (ignition system, radio, headlights, wipers, power windows and seats, computer, etc.).
Motor oil also plays an important role. The lubrication system ensures that every moving part in the engine gets oil so it can move easily. The two main parts that need oil are the pistons (so they can slide easily in the cylinders) and any bearings that allow things like the crankshaft and camshaft to rotate freely. In most cars, the oil is sucked from the oil pan by an oil pump, flows through an oil filter to remove any grit, and then is sprayed at high pressure onto the bearings and cylinder walls. The oil then drips into the oil pan where it is collected again and the cycle repeats.
Now that you know some of the parts in your car, let’s take a look at the exhaust parts in your car. The exhaust system consists of the exhaust pipe and the muffler. Without a muffler, all you hear are thousands of little explosions coming out of the exhaust pipe. A muffler can reduce the sound.
